About Short Story Radio Short Story Radio was founded by Ian Skillicorn in 2006. The aim of the website is to promote the short story form and short story writers, and to broadcast quality recordings of short stories via the website and podcast. Our stories are listened to by tens of thousands of people a month, from all over the world. Over the past five years, Short Story Radio has forged links with many literary organisations and writers. We have broadcast work by emerging writers from The Writers' Centre, Norwich and Mslexia magazine, as well as new works by bestselling authors Sue Gee, Sophie King and Sue Moorcroft, and television scriptwriters John Finch, Alan Coleman and Ruth Field. Our stories have also been heard on many radio stations around the UK. We have also donated stories to Insight Radio, the radio station of the Royal National Institute of the Blind. In June 2009 Short Story Radio was awarded funding by Arts Council England to record a series of short stories for the website and podcast. Short Story Radio gratefully acknowledges this support from Arts Council England, which has provided a rare career opportunity for over twenty writers and actors. Short Story Radio founder and producer, Ian Skillicorn, is a sought after speaker at meetings of UK writing groups and has recently spoken at the Get Writing! conference at the University of Hertfordshire and the School Librarian Day of the School Librarians' Association. Short Story Radio plans to build on its success to reach an even wider audience and to produce more recordings of engaging, quality stories from a diverse range of published and previously unpublished writers. Ian Skillicorn, Short Story Radio founder and producer After graduating with a BA (Hons) in Language Studies from Essex University, Ian
started his career in Italy, where he worked as a writer and translator on a national
magazine and also wrote a three volume English language course-book. Among other
work, he also translated numerous advertising campaigns and video and television scripts, and
worked regularly in recording studios as a director and voice artist.
Ian founded Short Story Radio in 2006. He also produces promotional podcasts for
authors and publishers through www.talkingbookshelf.com. These podcasts include an author
interview and readings of book extracts by professional actors (many of whom also record for Short Story
Radio). In 2010 Ian founded the UK's National Short Story Week, which was celebrated by libraries,
bookshops, schools, universities and readers and writers throughout the country. This year's
National Short Story Week promises to be an even greater success, with exciting partnerships
with publishers, libraries, schools, writers and broadcasters. Visit the National Short Story
Week website for more information. Ian is a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, the Translators’ Association
and the Society of Authors. |
