Now is your chance to have your short story professionally recorded and broadcast to a worldwide audience on Short Story Radio.

The winner of our Short Story Radio competition will have their story recorded by a British Equity member actor and produced by the creative team behind Short Story Radio. The winning story will be broadcast on shortstoryradio.com and can also be played on your own website (don't worry if you don't have a website - the winning writer also gets their own website worth £250).

Three runners up will have their story published in our online Short Story Magazine and receive a free web page profile on the Short Story Radio website.

Any writer may submit a story to our competition. Although stories must be written in English, we welcome submissions from writers anywhere in the world.

Competition Rules

Only submit your story if you agree to the following terms. Please also read our copyright terms. Read the following terms carefully. On occasion we receive submissions from writers who have not followed our terms and conditions and these stories cannot be considered.

By submitting a story you agree to be bound by our copyright terms and the terms stated below:

  • Writers of any nationality are welcome to submit a story, but the story must be written in English
  • Stories must fall into one of the following categories: drama/romance, historical fiction/memoir, humour, magic realism, mystery/thriller, science fiction. Your submission should clearly state which category it falls under in order to be considered
  • The story must be fictional and maximum 3,000 words
  • Stories should not contain expletives or content of an overtly religious, political, sexual or violent nature
  • Stories submitted for consideration must not have been published or broadcast previously (including but not limited to print, public performance, on-line or audio formats) and must be original pieces of work written by the writer who has submitted the story
  • Only the winning writers will be notified. No further correspondence will be entered into once work has been submitted. If you do not hear from us within 5 weeks from the closing date (31st October 2008) please assume that on this occasion your entry has not been successful
  • Writers may submit up to four stories for consideration
  • Stories cannot be altered or changed after they have been submitted
  • We reserve the right to make editorial changes to stories due to technical or practical circumstances arising out of the recording

Important tip

Unfortunately we are not able to offer feedback or a critique of stories submitted to us. However, when choosing a story to submit we suggest you consider carefully whether it would work as a spoken story. Some stories may work well on the page but do not translate well to an audio performance.

Writers retain the copyright to their submitted story, regardless of whether or not it is chosen for broadcast. Copyright of the recording of the winning story remains with shortstoryradio.com, who have the right to unlimited broadcasts of each story on shortstoryradio.com and unlimited availability of each story by podcast, for a period of twelve months. Any further broadcast or use of the recording of a story can only be made by prior arrangement with and express permission of the writer and voice actor.
